Mahindra Thar Review

Summary

The Thar is one of the most powerful and affordable Mahindra cars in India. The vehicle has always been appreciated for its brilliant off-roading capabilities, robust body-built and legendary jeep styling. It looks very rugged and masculine, and has commanding road presence. The interior design is very basic. It’s spacious, but isn’t comfortable. Seats lack under thigh support, and offer limited back rest support. Powering the Thar is a 105bhp, 2.5-litre CRDe turbocharged diesel motor and a 63bhp, 2.6-litre, MDI diesel engine. A 5-speed manual gearbox is the only available option. Both the engines are powerful, and deliver outstanding off-road and on-road performance. Handling is predictable and the ride gets bouncy on rough roads.

Further to this, read Mahindra Thar Road Test details by our expert.

Exterior

The iconic jeep styling makes the Thar look attractive. Wearing an aggressive front-fascia with chrome treatment, it appears rugged and very masculine. The recessed headlamps, side steps, rear bumpers, rear footsteps and other styling elements add more to its exterior appeal.

Interior

The cabin of the car is quite spacious, but the material quality is a big letdown. The front seats are adjustable. The seats are well-cushioned, but lack under thigh support. The back rest support, too, is restricted. The driving position offers commanding road view. It gets instrument cluster, music player on console and few standard features.

Engine and Transmission

The vehicle is available in two diesel engine options - a 2.5-litre CRDe turbocharged and a 2.6-litre, MDI. The  2489cc, 2.5-litre, CRDe turbocharged engine produces a maximum power of 105bhp at 3800rpm with a peak torque of 247Nm at 1800rpm. The 2523cc, 2.6-litre MDI mill churns out 63bhp with 182.5Nm between 1500rpm - 1800rpm. Both the engines are mated with a 5-speed manual transmission.

Performance and Handling

The off-road capability of the car is outstanding, and the on-road performance is decent, too. It’s is one of the most fun-to-drive Mahindra car models that accelerates 0-100kmph in 17 seconds, while the DI engine version takes 19.5 seconds. It has an electronic speed limit of 155kmph. The engine is extremely powerful, and barely audible. The agile suspension absorbs bumps and jerks so well, and aids to its ride quality. The steering is responsive, and handling is balanced.

Braking System

Equipped with the front disc brakes and rear drum brakes, the vehicle ensures a confidence-inspiring and safe drive. The DI variant gets a dual hydraulic circuit with the tandem master cylinder, while the CRDe version features LCRV braking system that enhance their braking capabilities.

Mileage

The 2498 cc Diesel - powered variant delivers a fuel economy of 11 kmpl in city and 13 kmpl on highways.

Safety Features

The vehicle is barely equipped with safety features. It gets an engine immobilizer, side impact beams, front impact beams and passenger side rear view mirror.

Verdict

The Thar is one of the most powerful, practical and affordable Mahindra cars in India. With rugged jeep looks, robust body-built and off-roading capabilities, it makes a perfect pick for enthusiasts.

Competition

The Maruti Suzuki Gypsy is the closest competitor of the Mahindra Thar. The Thar has a rugged timeless design, while the Gypsy looks outdated with its conventional styling. Mahindra’s jeep offers more comfortable and well-equipped interior, though the design is very basic. It’s more powerful, frugal and better off-roader than the Gypsy.

Pros

Retro jeep design
Robust body built, engine and gearbox
Effortless highway performance
Off-roading capabilities
Cons

Interior quality

Impractical for day-to-day driving purpose
Expensive repair
Steering feel edgy over 100kph

Toyota Innova Crysta

₹ 14.33 - 22.69 lakhs
MILEAGE: 14 - 15 kmpl

Quick Facts about Toyota Innova Crysta

Toyota Innova Crysta, a Mpv/Muv has 18 versions available in India. Innova Crysta has 8 Petrol cars and 10 Diesel cars. Toyota Innova Crysta comes in 6 colours, namely, Avant-Garde Bronze, Garnet Red, Grey, Silver, Super White, White Pearl Crystal Shine.

Toyota Innova Crysta Review

Summary

Toyota has built an all new Innova and has named it the Innova Crrysta. The Crysta is a step above the original Innova and turns out to be a premium people mover with the new equipment and build, way up the ladder from where the first Innova started in 2005. The Innova Crysta is all new, based on the TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture) platform. Since it began sales in 2005, the Innova had remained pretty much the same, save for a host of cosmetic updates which came in three batches with the last one coming in 2014.

The Innova Crysta ideally competes with the Mahindra XUV 500 and the soon to be launched Tata Hexa. The pricing though indicates that the Innova Crysta demands a chunky premium over its competition, something the buyers would pay for an equally reliable and better equipped car.

Further to this, read Toyota Innova Crysta Road Test details by our expert.

Exterior

The all-new Innova Crysta gets a boxy MPV design, but gets a lower roof line making it look longer. The SUV-ish fascia is dominated by a two-slat grille in line with their current design philosophy. The headlights are projector units, and there is an addition of DRLs in this new version. The side profile, thanks to the roofline and the blacked out B and C-pillars, gives the car a much sleeker appearance. The sloping roof cuts into the visibility of the third row and the wrap around thick D-pillar adds to it. The rear profile overall remains the same as before but gets a spoiler and the boomerang tail lamps. The prominent shoulder line and lower rear bumper and the boxy shape makes it looks butch.

Interior

The interior of the new Innova replicates the Corolla in many ways. The interior is all-black except for the top-spec automatic variant which gets tan coloured upholstery. The cabin now comes packed with features including power windows, automatic climate control, a new touchscreen infotainment system with navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, USB and aux-in. The twin-pod instrument cluster is new and blue-lit with a multi-function display. Automatic climate control system with a blower for the rear passengers completes the interior. Also included in the list are tables for the second row, 12-volt sockets for the third row and a plethora of storage spaces both above and below.

The Innova Crysta gets disc brakes up front. ABS and EBD is standard across all variants. Dual front airbags with knee airbag are also standard across all variants. The automatic variants get hill-assist and ESP too. The projector headlamps provide adequate illumination without causing glares and the reverse parking sensors offered on the higher trims help safe parking.

Engine Transmission

The Toyota Innova Crysta is available with two diesel mills. The all-new 2.4-litre diesel unit producing 147bhp and 360Nm of torque is mated to a five-speed manual gearbox. The 2.8-litre mill develops 174bhp of power at 3400rpm and 360Nm of torque from as low as 1200rpm and comes mated to an automatic gearbox. Both the engines are quite refined as compared to the 2.5-litre rattler and power the rear wheels of the new Innova.

Thanks to the heavier kerb weight and Toyota going for a softer suspension setting, the new Innova rolls considerably more and it feels like a heavy car too. On the plus side, the steering is quite direct and you can still steer the Innova with confidence and there is loads of grip from the 17-inch wheels.

Mileage

The 2393 cc Diesel - powered variant delivers a fuel economy of 13 kmpl in city and 15 kmpl on highways, while the Petrol variant offers a mileage of 12 kmpl on urban roads and 14 kmpl on freeways, respectively.

Volkswagen Polo Review

Summary

The Volkswagen Polo hatchback was launched in 2010 and since then the German automaker has ensured that the vehicle is refreshed often to keep it looking young and appealing. The Polo is powered by a range of petrol and diesel powertrains, which gives the buyer a variety of options to pick from. The Volkswagen Polo now comes with an array of features and gets most of them what other premium hatchbacks offer.

The Volkswagen Polo competes with the premium hatchbacks like the Hyundai Elite i20, Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Fiat Punto Evo and Honda Jazz.

Further to this, read Volkswagen Polo Road Test details by our expert.

Exterior

The Volkswagen Polo, unlike its competition, has the classic hatchback design, the one any kindergarten kid would draw for a small car. The lines are clean straight and elegant. The sleek front grille comes with sharp looking headlamps and then there are some chrome additions that is similar to other Volkswagen fascias. The side profile of the Polo hasn't changed and this still looks a well proportionate hatchback. The rear of the Polo doesn’t get a major update. The 10-spoke alloy wheel design looks stylish and much better than the Vento. 15-inch wheels are offered on the Highline variant, while the rest of them get 14-inch ones.

Interior

Volkswagen has been updating the Polo’s interiors from time to time and now the premium hatchback comes loaded with features like touchscreen infotainment system, reverse parking camera, satellite navigation, USB and aux in-put, steering mounted audio controls. The GT range has full black interiors and this makes it look sportier. The space in the front row is good, however it is the second row that is tight on space making it difficult for tall people to seat behind.

The Volkswagen Polo comes with features like dual airbags, ABS with EBD, ending immobiliser, central locking, child safety lock, fog lamps, reverse parking sensors and reverse parking camera depending on the variants.

Engine & Transmission

The Volkswagen Polo comes with a 1.2-litre petrol engine that churns about 75bhp of power and comes with a five-speed manual transmission. The Polo GT TSI gets the 104bhp 1.2-litre TSI that comes mated to a seven-speed dual catch transmission. The updated 1.5-litre TDI diesel engine develops 89bhp of power and is mated to five-speed manual gearbox. The diesel also comes with a higher state of tune at 108bhp for the GT TDI. The strength of the Polo are the engine options and the features it comes packed with.

The Volkswagen Polo has good performance with the TSI engine and the diesel engine. This has one of the best performance in its segment and even the handling of the Polo is as good as any other Volkswagens. The alacrity of the chassis is one of the best on the Polo. The ride quality of the Polo is good enough, and it irons out most of the road shocks even on bad roads.

Mileage

The 1598 cc Diesel - powered variant delivers a fuel economy of 18 kmpl in city and 20 kmpl on highways, while the Petrol variant offers a mileage of 14 kmpl on urban roads and 16 kmpl on freeways, respectively.

Mahindra Xylo

Mahindra Xylo price starts at ₹ 10.79 Lakhs and goes upto ₹ 14.4 Lakhs. Diesel Xylo price starts at ₹ 10.79 Lakhs

Mahindra Xylo Review

Mahindra offers its true MUV in the form of the Xylo. Originally code-named the Ingenio, it has officially been named the 'Xylo.' The Xylo sports great build quality along with fit & finish.

Exterior

Mahindra Xylo's aggressive radiator grille - with chrome slats look uber cool. The top model comes with body colored bumper and integrated fog lamps. The muscular features of Xylo give the car great road presence and the proportionately sized rear view mirrors and wrap-around taillights add to its appeal. Xylo's rear three quarter view with stylish tail lamps and chrome strip above the number plate give it an up market look.

Interior

The driver's seat is ergonomically designed with height adjustment control to maximise comfort on long drives. Lumbar support can also be adjusted to three positions while the unique tiltable steering wheel gives you the perfect driving position. An illuminated keyhole ring allows you to conveniently locate the keyhole even in pitch dark conditions. Xylo has sufficient legroom for all its passengers and is also the only car to offer flatbed front seats, just like in the business class of a world-class airline. Additional unique features include foldable flight trays behind the front seats, individual reading lamps for each passenger and conveniently placed laptop and mobile charging points. The doors are fitted with puddle lamps, giving passengers visibility while alighting from the car at night. A wide arm rest in the front row provides the driver and co-passenger with comfort, while an integrated foot rest allows easy entry and exit. Independent AC vents ensure that the Surround Cool Dual AC cools all corners of this spacious car with individual controls for each passenger. Utility spaces abound in the Mahindra XYLO with a well defined Centre Console housing space for CDs, magazines, etc

Engine

Xylo is powered by the same engine used in the recently launched Bolero Storm CRDe but it has been fine tuned further to give more power and has been named M-Eagle CRDe. It generates maximum power of 112 Bhp at 3800 rpm with maximum torque of 240 Nm at 1800-3000 rpm. The engine is meshed with a five-speed manual gearbox and has been built on the Scorpio NEF CRDe engine family with relevant technological advancements. When a burst of power is needed, the top mounted intercooler delivers. Dual pilot injection increases the XYLO's drivability scores, while advanced engine damping, hydraulic lash adjustor technology and auto tensioner ensure minimum service frequency and a pleasurable drive. It is available in five variants - E2, E4, E6, E8 & E8 ABS. The base model E2 comes with single AC, Power Windows, Power Steering.

Technology

One of the most revolutionary features of the Xylo is the tech-savvy Digital Drive Assist System (DDAS). An alphanumeric display in the centre panel, the DDAS has features such as an onboard computer to calculate mileage and distance permissible. The system is easy to read and provides useful data at a quick glance. Standard information available includes date, time, inside and outside temperature and relative humidity.

It also lets you know exactly which direction your Mahindra Xylo is headed in. Press a button and you are informed of your gear position and speed. The DDAS will even tell you how long your fuel will last and share information on your average speed and the instant mileage clocked by you. All of which ensures that you derive optimum mileage from your Mahindra Xylo.

The DDAS also has an inbuilt warning system which will prompt you to put on your seat belts in case you forget or if you attempt to drive with the handbrake engaged, for instance. The Intellipark Reverse Assist has a visual prompt in the rear view mirror which shows you the distance between the rear bumper and any object behind your car. The 2 Din Entertainment System is also feature packed. It enables playback from MP3s and CDs, SD cards and USB devices, giving you a superlative acoustic experience on the road.

Leading vendors from India, Japan, America, Germany, etc., have contributed to the development of the Xylo. To name a few, Bosch, Lear, Motherson, Nippon, Subros, JBM, Spicer, Visteon, Lumax, Alf, Asahi, Sharda, Rane and Varroc have played a key role in creating the Xylo. Overall, Xylo is a feature rich & reasonably priced MUV which will sure set the sales charts on fire. Now we have to see how Tata reacts to this and comes with a better deal with its upcoming Indicruz Xover.

Safety

Mahindra Xylo is fully packed with safety features, offering a high-level of protection to its occupants. Apart from the standard safety features such as seatbelts and tilt steering column, the car has been equipped with special crumple zones as well. The recently added ABS option has made the Xylo more competitive and safe in comparison to the Innova. The vehicle's engine immobilizer is designed to prevent theft. When an inappropriate key is used to start the car, the immobilizer cuts off the fuel supply to the engine. This way, it protects the car from an unauthorized entry.

Verdict

Mahindra & Mahindra's diesel-driven Xylo is one of the finest vehicles for off-roading as well as to maneuver inside the city despite its size. Its muscular exteriors contribute to its commanding presence on the road. The sporty exteriors are well complemented by capacious and comfortable interiors. This combined with plenty of thoughtful storage spaces inside the Xylo's cabin make the Mahindra Xylo a very able companion for long journeys with large families.

Latest On TVS Star City Plus

TVS Motors were among the biggest players in the 110cc commuter segment at the turn of the century with the Victor range of motorcycles. Sadly for the Hosur based manufacturer, the Victor couldn’t survive the test time and slowly faded away after making a promising start. TVS knew that it couldn’t afford to bow out from the commuter segment given the volumes they register. The new TVS Star City+ was its comeback offering in the commuter segment.

The styling of the bike is similar to any modern commuter motorcycle with a bikini fairing, single piece headlamp, alloy wheels, sculpted fuel tank and the works. But owing to the snazzy graphics and the use of chrome on the exhaust shield and the 3D logo, the Star City+ is striking for a commuter offering. The Star City+ has an analogue dial for speedometer and a digital fuel gauge along with a service indicator and typical TVS, eco and power mode indicator. Switch gear quality of the motorcycle is fantastic and wouldn’t seem out of place on a more expensive motorcycle. Build quality and paint finish is also impressive and the bike is solidly put together and this has slowly becoming a hallmark of TVS products. Riding posture is upright in typical commuter fashion while the fuel tank recess mean that one can snugly hold the bike with your thighs.

Powering the motorcycle is a 110cc displacement motor that generates 8.4PS at 7,000rpm and 8.7Nm at 5,000rpm. Power is transmitted via a 4-speed constant mesh gearbox that performs satisfactorily. Suspension duties are handled by telescopic front forks and hydraulic shock absorbers at the back. The softly sprung suspension setup means it glides over undulated surfaces but the bike feels a bit spongy and wallows while cornering at high speeds. Braking is done via drum brake at front and rear and they do a decent job in shedding speeds but disc brake should have been offered as an option. TVS claims mileage figure of above 65kmpl for thr Star City+.

TVS Star City Plus Price

TVS Star City Plus prices start at Rs. 45,819 (Ex-Showroom) and the top end variant TVS Star City Plus Dual Tone is priced at Rs. 51,523 (Ex-Showroom). TVS Star City Plus is avialable in 4 variants and 11 colours.
